American Ori-Pei

History

Known as a designer breed, the American Ori-Pei is the result of crossing the Pug bloodlines with the Shar Pei bloodlines. It is important to note that with all designer breeds, not all breeds use the same breeding techniques. For example, one breeder may chose to breed a male Ori-Pei with a female Pug, making the liter of puppies primarily Pug and now resulting in the puppies to take on the appearance and personality more so of the Pug than of the Shar Pei side. If you and your family do in fact have a personal preference for this, than base your search for your perfect puppy with these notes in mind and discuss these topics with different breeders.

Appearance

The American Ori Pei is a medium to large breed generally weighing in for both males and females between 25-35 pounds in weight and measuring between 14-18 inches in height. This breed generally has a short, thick coat of hair that does shed. Available in tan with a black mask. Their ears are triangular and folded at the top of their head. Body build very lean and rectangular with extra folds of skin around their face, neck and chest. The amount of these is per individual dog. Their eyes are a dark brown to black in color and generally large and circular in shape. Their trade mark is their curved to curled tail since both breeds this breed is created by, has this characteristic.

Temperament

Generally, the American Ori-Pei is a fun loving, energetic breed. This breed is recommended for households with older children, due to them being a stubborn dog breed, as they can be difficult to train. Puppy obedience classes to help teach your new pet, as well as you, how to handle situations is best recommended for this breed.

Grooming

Daily brushing is recommended for this breed. Please note this breed sheds more than average and can cause irritation to owners skin. This is a side affect of the Shar Pei bloodlines.

Please note that each designer breed puppy is his or her own individual. With these breeds, it is impossible to say what it will look like or act like when he or she reaches full maturity. Please fully educate yourself about both breeds when considering a designer breed to ensure this is the proper dog for your family. Do not add a new dog to your family unless you are physically and financially able to make a life long commitment to your new family member. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
